Why My Book Covers Work

Book cover designer with publishing experience

Publishing experience: I’ve designed covers for imprints such as Oberon, AdN, and Contraluz, which gives me first-hand knowledge of real publishing standards: what works in a bookstore, what looks good on screen, and what sets a publisher-quality book apart.

I’m also a writer: I’ve published five books. I know what it’s like to spend years on a manuscript and want a cover that’s just as good. That shapes how I listen, the questions I ask, and how I design your book.

Professional-level design for every project: Whether you’re publishing with a traditional publisher or through Amazon KDP, my standards stay the same. Your book deserves a cover that doesn’t scream “self-published.”

Working closely with a cover designer who understands both traditional publishing and self-publishing makes all the difference.

What Authors Say About My Book Covers

I worked with Shema on the “Obra Cadabra” plan (now the Complete Self-Publishing Package) to publish my first novel, La noche del eclipse, and it was a great experience.

From the start, I knew that even though it was a self-published novel, I wanted a truly professional publishing finish. I didn’t want a generic layout or a basic cover. I wanted the book to have its own personality and to be carefully crafted down to the last detail.

Shema understood that idea perfectly from day one. Both the cover and the interior layout were beautifully crafted and completely in tune with the tone and identity of the novel.

I also want to highlight the support throughout the whole process: answering questions, suggesting solutions, and helping me make decisions at every stage.

Communication was always friendly, fast, and professional, and you can tell there’s a genuine commitment to getting the best possible result.

In my case, I asked for several versions of the book: paperback, hardcover, and Kindle for Amazon, plus an edition with flaps for offset printing. The final result is exactly what I was looking for: self-published, yes, but with a look and finish that don’t feel like it.

Without a doubt, an experience I’d recommend to any author who truly wants to take care of how their book is published.

I’m delighted to have worked with Shema. I hired him to format one of my poetry collections, and I’ll definitely be back for my next book. He was very professional, attentive, and approachable.

It was a fantastic experience. We worked on the cover, the formatting, mockups, bookmarks, metadata, and an Amazon mentoring session. I’m really happy with how everything turned out. The cover is incredible, and the formatting easily rivals a traditional publisher’s.

Thank you for everything, Shema.

Working with Shema was a smooth experience. These days it feels like everything is a bumpy ride, but not with him. He was always available and quick to respond.

When I explained how I wanted the cover, he listened very carefully and captured my idea perfectly. I was looking for a clean, minimalist design. In fact, he didn’t just capture the idea, he improved on it. The result is a cover I love. I also ordered bookmarks from him, and they turned out beautifully.

As for the interior, I was obsessed with the book looking like it came from a traditional publisher rather than self-published. And it does. The book has nothing to envy a traditionally published one.

I know that when I write another book, I’ll go to him again.

My Book Cover Design Process

Every cover project starts with a conversation and ends with a publish-ready file. In between, there’s a rigorous editorial process that makes sure your cover works wherever it needs to.
Book design service icon

1. Get in touch

Reach out anytime to get your cover design started. Send me a message, fill out the form, or book a short free call. That way I can guide you from the very beginning.

Book cover design icon

2. First meeting

In our first meeting, you’ll tell me what your book is about and what kind of cover you have in mind. We’ll talk about the tone, mood, and style you want to convey. With that, I’ll analyze your genre and audience so we start your cover on a solid foundation.

Book cover design icon

3. Research

I research your genre and look at how similar books are presented to understand what works in your market. I study visual references, styles, and current trends. From there, I decide which elements your cover needs to stand out and connect with your readers.

Book design service icon

4. Proposal

I’ll put together an initial design proposal based on the central idea of your book, working on composition, typography, and visual style to set the aesthetic direction of your cover. This first version shows us whether we’re on the right track, and your references or suggestions help me keep refining the design.

5. Final design

Once the concept is approved, I develop the final version of your cover. I refine the composition, images, and visual hierarchy so everything fits the essence of your book. During this phase, I test variations, fine-tune details, and make sure the design works just as well in digital as in print, for a polished, consistent result.

6. Revisions

Once you have a detailed proposal, we move on to revisions. This is where we polish your cover: I adjust fonts, colors, layout, and any other details you’d like to improve. The number of revision rounds depends on the package you choose, always aiming for a cover that’s a perfect fit for your book.

7. Final adjustments

Before delivering the final version, I check every detail to make sure your cover works in every format. I fine-tune colors, fonts, and proportions so it looks crisp and polished in both ebook and print, and is ready to publish without any complications.

8. Your cover is ready

Once your cover is finished, I’ll prepare all the files you need to publish: Kindle and print versions that meet the requirements of your self-publishing platform. If you’d like, I also offer an Amazon KDP upload service that takes your book all the way to published and on sale, without you having to lift a finger.

Book Cover Design FAQs

It depends on the package you choose. The Kafka Package (ebook) costs €249, VAT included, and includes one design proposal and one revision. The Austen Package costs €429, VAT included, and includes two design proposals and up to three revisions.

Of course! You can add extra proposals, extra revisions, or promotional materials as needed. Contact me for a detailed quote.

My cover designs are mainly based on photomontage and digital collage: I combine high-quality images and graphic elements to create a unique design that captures the essence of your book. When needed, I use tools like Illustrator to create graphic elements or simple illustrations. If your idea calls for a fully custom, detailed illustration, that kind of work may require collaborating with a specialized illustrator.

The editable file is created in professional design and layout software that takes advanced skills to use. It includes all the layers, fonts, colors, and design elements in their original form, so the design can be modified in the future.

It’s charged separately because of the time and care it takes to organize and prepare the file properly, so that another designer can reuse or edit it while keeping the quality and integrity of the design.

The editable file isn’t included in any package, but you can add it as an extra to either package for €390.

Editable files (.indd, .psd, or .ai) aren’t included in the packages; you can add them as an optional extra. I keep the files for 6 months after final delivery. After that, I can’t guarantee they’ll still be available.

Yes. All covers intended for Amazon are delivered optimized for Amazon KDP, both for Kindle and for print-on-demand. They’re also ready for traditional printing with special finishes.

The Importance of a Good Book Cover Design

A professional book cover designer can completely transform the look and feel of your book. The cover is one of the most important elements for attracting readers.

Every story needs its own approach and a well-designed cover that captures its essence. When design and strategy work together, your readership grows steadily.

Investing in a book cover designer is key to standing out in a competitive market. A good cover can make the difference between going unnoticed and being impossible to resist.

If you want to take your project all the way, I can also help you with professional book formatting for a fully cohesive result.

Creative Book Cover Design

Book Cover Designer for Self-Published Authors

If you’re self-publishing on Amazon KDP, you need a cover designer who understands the platform’s technical requirements. Covers don’t look the same in digital and print, and a poorly optimized design can hurt your book’s visibility. I’ll make sure your cover meets each platform’s technical standards and has the visual quality of a major publisher.

Your book cover is your best marketing tool

Creativity in cover design is essential for making a visual impact on Amazon, in online bookstores, and on social media.

Creativity is essential for a cover designer who wants to make a visual impact on Amazon, in online bookstores, and on social media.

As a graphic designer, I know how much a good cover can influence a book’s success. If your book doesn’t look as polished as it deserves, you’re losing readers. A cover isn’t just an image; it’s a strategic tool that grabs attention, sparks interest, and, above all, drives sales. I’ll help you design a cover that gets past readers’ visual filter and invites them to discover your story.

The Key to Selling on Amazon KDP: Creative, Professional Covers That Stand Out

A crucial first impression: Your cover is what attracts readers and holds that first flicker of interest. In less than five seconds, a reader decides whether your book is worth their attention. If your book doesn’t stand out, readers may scroll right past it without even reading the blurb.
Greater visibility: In a crowded market, standing out isn’t optional; it’s essential. A good cover doesn’t just grab attention, it creates an emotional connection with readers and sparks their interest at first glance.
Impact on sales: A professional cover is your best tool for standing out. It doesn’t just make your book more likely to be chosen; it turns more potential readers into actual buyers.
